Syd's Story

Seventeen year old, Red Wing Senior Syd begins her story with, “ I was always the weird one, my mom says I was born weird.”  Syd used joking, and being odd as a way of coping with her life situation, which she describes as lonely. Her family consisted of her mother, an absentee father, who she describes as “too high to care much about her”, and her mom’s boyfriend at the time, who emotionally abused Syd.  By the time she got to Middle School, Syd says she simply stopped caring. She was treated for depression; she practiced self-mutilation and developed an eating disorder.

Help was waiting, when one day during 6th Grade, Syd passed the Youth Outreach room at Twin Bluff Middle School and saw some girls she liked in the room. When she got the courage to enter, she was introduced a RWYO youth worker and the positive changes began.  Syd acknowledges that “changes don’t happen overnight” and that it has taken until this year for her to really feel like she is on the right track. “Things are better now in High School, but I still need support”.  She finds this support in being part of the Youth Outreach Student Advisory board and with two very close friends in whom she confides.

Syd has goals for the future and has started her senior year with a plan. She wants to live in the present and leave the past behind, take her studies seriously, get into shape physically and upon graduation enlist in the Air Force.  Syd hopes to use the Air Force to develop the skills and discipline necessary to go to college and on to veterinary school.

At Red Wing Youth Outreach we believe that all children deserve the support needed to become healthy adults. Wise beyond her years, Syd is well on her way to a promising future.
